Do you have a moment to talk about Jesus
David with the head of Goliath by Caravaggio - 1610
In 1606, Caravaggio murdered a man named Ranuccio Tomassoni. He fled to Naples and travelled to places such as Malta where he was safe from the governors of Rome and where he continued to paint. Throughout the next 4 years Caravaggio was looked after by friends and family and lived in fear of his enemies who had come to avenge Tomassoni’s death. ln 1608 he managed to escape imprisonment after starting a brawl and seriously injuring a knight.
During the summer of 1610, he set off to receive a pardon for his crime from the new Pope. Caravaggio was now free from all he had been running from, however he never made it back to Rome alive.
The artist died on July 18th on a beach in Tuscany.
This painting is suspected to be his last ever painting where he depicts himself as Goliath, a monster. It is now believed that the murder was in fact accidental and there are many theories about how the artist himself died.
Annemarie ‘accidental fashion spread’ Schwarzenbach. I am filled with questions about that first photo, and by adding that it was taken on a boat, the caption hasn’t answered many of them. The second photo, however, was sent as part of an enthusiastic seduction campaign to the yet-unmoved Erika Mann. Reads the reverse: “A desperately starved and frozen schoolboy.”
This is the single most disturbing fortune cookie I’ve ever gotten.
